I came across a quote about the ups-and-downs of life that I wanted to share it with you. I’ve copied it at the end of this email, but I’ve taken the liberty of changing the word ‘life’ to ‘ your PhD’, if only to show you that a PhD, like life, isn’t always meant to be plain sailing, so try your darn hardest to soak up the good times and let the bad times pass. Timely advice, given the current context.
‘Your PhD is amazing. And then it’s awful. And then it’s amazing again. And in between the amazing and the awful it’s ordinary and mundane and routine. Breathe in the amazing, hold on through the awful, and relax and exhale during the ordinary. That’s just doing a heart-breaking, soul-healing, amazing, awful, ordinary PhD. I’ve been where you are and was convinced during the process that I wouldn’t ever make it to the end. But I did, so my advice to you is this: enjoy your PhD. It’s brutal and hellish at times, but it’ll be over soon and you’ll find yourself missing it dearly. It may not feel like it, but you will.
