Before the session

You don't need to prepare anything. But if you have ten minutes beforehand, these will help you get more out of the three hours.

  1. Bring a piece of writing you're working on. A draft chapter, a section, an abstract, or even a page of notes. You'll be working on real writing during the session, so having something to hand makes the exercises far more useful.
  2. Jot down the writing challenge you most want help with. Getting started, finding your argument, sounding like yourself, or writing regularly. One sentence is enough.
  3. Check Zoom is working. Update the app if needed and test your microphone and camera. The session is interactive, with group discussion and peer feedback, so joining with your camera and mic on helps if you can.
  4. Find a quiet space for the morning. Somewhere you can talk and write for three hours, with your document open and a pen and paper nearby.
  5. Protect the time. The session is live and won't be recorded, so block out 9:00am–12:00pm in your diary and let anyone who needs to know that you're unavailable.
