About this workshop
Writing is at the centre of every doctorate. But for many researchers, it is also where confidence breaks down. You know what you want to say, yet the gap between your thinking and what appears on the page can feel enormous. And when writing stalls, everything else stalls with it.
This practical, interactive workshop is designed to help you close that gap. Over three hours, you will work through strategies for writing with greater clarity, developing your academic argument, and building the kind of consistent writing practice that keeps your research moving forward. You will leave with tools you can use straight away, and a clearer sense of what is holding you back and how to move past it.
The session is led by Dr Simon Pratt-Adams, a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy with over 25 years of experience supporting doctoral researchers. Whether you are in your first year or deep into your thesis, this workshop meets you where you are.
What you'll take away
A single focused session covering the practical skills that make doctoral writing less painful and more productive.
By the end of this workshop, you will be better able to:
- Prepare and present doctoral-level academic writing using appropriate conventions, language, and style
- Develop a coherent, conceptually clear, and well-structured argument
- Use early and regular writing practices to build momentum and reduce pressure
- Demonstrate criticality, originality, and academic voice in your work
- Identify strategies for managing writer's block and using your time effectively
- Reflect on your own writing process through peer and student perspectives
How it works
This is a working session, not a lecture. You will be writing, discussing, and practising throughout.
Interactive workshop
The three-hour session is built around structured activities, peer discussion, and guided writing exercises. You will work through real challenges from your own research, get feedback from your peers, and practise techniques you can take back to your desk the same day.
Practical resources
You will receive handouts and templates to support your writing practice beyond the workshop, including frameworks for structuring arguments, strategies for building writing routines, and prompts for developing your academic voice.
